Present-day Bolivia was known as Upper Peru during the colonial period.
The country was named in honor of the great Liberator, Simon Bolívar, who
wrote the original constitution in 1827. A press did not begin to
function in Bolivia until the outbreak of the wars of independence, and
its output consisted mainly of government proclamations and other
official documents. The JCB holds ten works printed in Bolivia, from La
Paz and Cuzco, and done between 1827 and 1838. These include a copy of
the 1831 constitution that replaced constitution written by Bolivar, and
the first edition of a widely popular epic poem, La Batalla de Yanacocha,
from 1835.
